5 Star Rating A legendary strategy returns with new life, and blows you away

"Man alive I love this game! This was a classic strategy game from 1994 (originally UFO:Enemy Unknown). This is a very faithful adaptation that keeps many of the good qualities of the original and improves on it also. There are some downsides, which I won't go into as they may reveal some of the story, but thankfully these were resolved in the expansion pack "XCOM: Enemy Within". I have so far completed this 3 times (2 on PS3, 1 on PC) and keep going back for more.

    I would...

"If you have played and enjoyed Enemy Unknown, you won't be disappointed with Enemy Within. I completely understand the console players discouragement towards the latest Addon. After purchasing the original game and the DLC, to then buy everything again a year later. But I must say, the content that comes with Enemy Within is worth its £25. They have added an endless amount of maps, I think 46 new maps? So far I've played over 18 hours, encountered the new enemy EXALT. You can send one soldier...

    "was really looking forward to this one, and have to say that the improvements they have made to the game make it much more engaging;

+the awarding of service medals with additional perks and the ability to decorate your soldiers with them
+MEC units for new and varied tactical battles
+reworked levels and 47 new ones some of which are awesome
+new enemy types and new weapons to fight them with
+new missions extending the gameplay further
    +new set of...

    4 Star Rating Solid Expansion
By: JRM, on November 17, 2013
    Pros:
    Cons:

"XCOM Enemy Within is the follow-up expansion to the hit revival of the XCOM franchise, Firaxis's 2012 XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It brings new enemy types, new factions, new weapons, Mech troopers, genetic modification, and a whole host of other additions.

The good: More maps added to the pools for all types of mission, although perhaps not quite as many as I would have hoped for. There is also some very unique new maps amongst the additions, as well of course the well publicised return of...

5 Star Rating XCOM just got better
    By: S. LEIB, on November 15, 2013
    Pros:
    Cons:

"Like many Xcom fans I placed my pre order some time back and have waited anxiously for the release date and the thump as the new game arrived through my letter box. So was it worth the wait?

In a word YES. The new game (as I will call it) is essentially the orginal Xcom plus the Slingshot DLC, plus the elite soldier pack, plus shockwave Plus.
Well, plus a whole lot more.
I loved the orriginal game, but like many players felt I'd been to the same crash sites many times, and...

3 Star Rating Solid gameplay but unconvincing story and characters
By: A. Whitehead "Werthead", on October 23, 2013

    Cons:

"1962. The Cold War is at its height. In great secrecy, President John F. Kennedy has ordered the founding of the Bureau of Operations and Command, code-named XCOM, which will coordinate the defence of the American homeland in case of a Soviet invasion. When Earth instead falls under clandestine attack by alien forces, XCOM's brief is changed to defend against the incursions. CIA Special Agent William Carter is recruited by XCOM as the alien attacks intensify and has to lead the fight back...

3 Star Rating So far So Good!
By: Mike Norton, on September 2, 2013
    Pros:
    Cons:

"I loved all the XCOM/UFO games to date, and really enjoyed the remake (XCOM Enemy Unknown). So I pre-ordered The Bureau on this. The Jury is still out on The Bureau as I thought it would be the same strategic / tactical game that the others were. This is not the same, but mixes a first / 3rd person shooter with a tactical type approach. Similar to the previous games you need recruit and train (On the job) agents as they accompany you (Carter) through the missions. I am still not quite sure if I...

4 Star Rating Absorbing, but unforgiving
By: Christopher Burns "chrisgb", on October 15, 2012
    Pros:
    Cons:

"I was a big fan of the original Microprose XCom release, and keen to see what the 2012 update would bring to the table. As with a lot of games, this is a mixed bag. The tactical RTS side of XCom has been massively face-lifted, and remains a difficult and absorbing sub-game in its own right. Most of the tactical skills from the original are transferable, but there's also been some notable changes. As noted, a lot of the "micro-management" has been removed, and it's not all for the better -...

5 Star Rating Best Strategy Game on the Xbox
By: Runeweaver, on October 12, 2012
    Pros:
    Cons:

"The Xbox has had a few Strategy games on it and most havent been very good, the main problem is the controller.
Most Strategy games are ported from the pc and are designed around a mouse and keyboard control scheme, and most fail when changed to console due to the restrictions in the amount of buttons.
But X-Com has always been a well designed Strategy game needing only a few controls and is also very easy to learn, the Xbox controller works very well on this updated version of the game...
